Academia Barilla Italian Culinary Specialist Mario Rizzotti, who makes several appearances in the documentary produced by Modio Media, sent us some video clips of the documentary, kindly provided by our Modio Media friends.

Modio Media DVDThe documentary, “And they came to Chicago: the Italian-American Legacy“, is narrated by Tony Award winner Joe Mantegna, and also features Barilla and Academia Barilla when talking about the impact of Italian food in the US culture in the last 150 years, and particularly in the Chicago Area.

In this video clip from the documentary Mario Rizzotti takes a break from a cooking session to quickly give away the fundamental tips on how to taste Italian extra-virgin olive oil, a topic we covered on the blog too, but sure a virtual tasting session with Mario is way superior to a simple blog post. June 7th, 2007 by academia press office

WTTW ChicagoI think there is nothing more to add to this email I just received from Mario Rizzotti, Academia Barilla’s Italian Culinary Specialist and TV Chef celebrity, so I will just copy and paste the email on this post. Here it is.

DEAR ALL,

I wanted to send you this e mail to let you know that Academia Barilla and Mario Rizzotti will be feature on WTTW channel 11 (please check your cable listing for the correct channel) during a documentary about Italian Americans.

The documentary is called “AND THEY CAME TO CHICAGO: THE ITALIAN AMERICAN LEGACY”.

Producer Gia Amelia did really an amazing job in portraying the Italians in the USA from the 1800 until today. Please do not miss this documentary, narrated by Tony Award Winner Joe Mantegna and with some famous Italian-American actors being part of it.

Plus do not miss the food segment where Academia Barilla and myself will appear. The segment turned out to be nice and vivid and Chef Dean Zannella from 312 Chicago will be using Academia Barilla products to prepare a special Ligurian-inspired recipe.

I have seen the previews and it is not the same boring documentary. You will like it, and if you are Italian American you will appreciated it even more.

Nothing more to say at this point besides “WATCH IT”, don’t miss it.

The documentary will be airing on WTTW Channel 11 at 5:30 p.m. Chicago time on June 10th, 2007. If you can’t watch it make sure you tape it at least so you can watch it when you have time.

Enjoy the show and send me your feed back.

Last input for this post - do you know what Va Pensiero is and means? OK, no trivia games here, I’ll tell you all about it.

Giuseppe Verdi NabuccoVa Pensiero literally means “go thoughts” and is the centerpiece of the Nabucco, Giuseppe Verdi’s first successful opera.

Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar), was written in 1842 by Parma-born opera Maestro Giuseppe Verdi and relates the Biblical story of the captivity of the Hebrews in Babylon in the 6th century B.C. In the opera, the chorus “Va, pensiero” (a paraphrase of Psalm 137) is sung by the exiles on the banks of the Euphrates, lamenting the loss of their homeland.

The piece soon became a popular anthem for the Italian people, expressing their own longing for political freedom from Austria. When Verdi’s coffin was carried to its final resting place a month after his death in 1901, the crowd of over 25,000 people along the route spontaneously began singing this stirring chorus.

Here are the original Va Pensiero lyrics - I will provide a translation right below.

Va’, pensiero, sull’ali dorate.
Va’, ti posa sui clivi, sui colli,
ove olezzano tepide e molli
l’aure dolci del suolo natal!

Del Giordano le rive saluta,
di Sionne le torri atterrate.
O mia Patria, sì bella e perduta!
O remembranza sì cara e fatal!

Arpa d’or dei fatidici vati,
perché muta dal salice pendi?
Le memorie del petto riaccendi,
ci favella del tempo che fu!

O simile di Solima ai fati,
traggi un suono di crudo lamento;
o t’ispiri il Signore un concento
che ne infonda al patire virtù

Giuseppe VerdiTranslation:

Fly, thoughts, on golden wings;
go settle upon the slopes and the hills,
where, soft and mild,
the sweet air of our native land smells fragrant!

Greet the banks of the Jordan
and Zion’s toppled towers.
Oh, my country so lovely and lost!
Oh, memory so dear and despairing!

Golden harp of the prophetic seers,
why do you hang mute upon the willow?
Rekindle our heart’s memories
and speak of times gone by!

Mindful of the fate of Jerusalem,
either sound a song of sad lamentation,
or else let the Lord give us the strength
to bear our sufferings!
