Academia Barilla Gastronomic Library: the Historic Menu Collection
February 27th, 2007There is really a lot to say about the historic menu collection recently aquired by Academia Barilla for the Gastronomic Library, but I cannot say much at this time, as the entire lot is still under study, in the indexing step under the good care of our Library experts, so I’m not even allowed to bo browse too much inside these boxes full of treasures.
But of course I couldn’t resist the temptacion browse such boxes, to find pearls such as Liberty-style design for menu of 5-star hotels and VIP cruises from the beginning of last century (including a copy of the menu for the opening trip of the Rex transatlantic cruise ship - that actually sinked in that occasion, as happened to the Titanic).
Academia Barilla’s historic menu collection includes hand-designed menus from the last couple of centuries, and official menus from historic lunches and dinners at the tables of Kings, Popes and even from Massonic Secret Dinners.
I’m sure I will be blogging about the Academia Barilla collection of historic menus soon, as soon as the entire new aquisition will be indexed and officially archived in our Gastronomic Library.
The only one piece I could achieve to get close to and photograph, possibly the most precious piece of the entire collection, is an incredible jewel reporting the menu of a King’s official wedding dinner. Check out this very exlusive photo preview from Academia Barilla for the Italian Food Lovers blog.
On the back ot the menu there is the music program for the dinner, with the music associated to each dish served that night (and obviosly played live by a directed orchestra). This was a tradition at VIP dinners at that time, as reported on other menus of the Academia Barilla collection - but none of them as precious and beautiful as this one.
